SABLE AND Nyala BREEDING PROJECT

Hippotragus Niger - Sable Antelope

At Blinkwater Game Farm we introduced this precious animal in November 2006.

Objectives:
To create revenue for the farm
Help to save the Sable antelope
Aesthetic quality for tourism
Increasing the variety of species at Blinkwater

Introducing the Sable which is internationally recognized as "the royal antelope" gives us an unreplicated significance. Guests to the farm will value an experience of seeing such an elegant animal in the bush. The aim with the antelope program would be to breed Sable in a fenced-off area using scientifically based approaches dedicated to create conditions for positive and exponential population growths. The Sable breeding program will definitely aid in wildlife conservation and also the unforgettable experience for the guests on the farm.

Nyala Breeding project

We are conducting an intensive Nyala breeding program.

Nyala (Nyala, Tragelapus angasii)
The male carries a pair of tall,lyre-shaped horns, ridged near the base butsmooth towards the pointed tips, that spiral gently upwards. He has a shaggy grey-brown to dark-brown coat, with a longer mane than the females, and he has a bushy brown tail with a white stripes on his flanks, white spots on the thighs and belly, and a white chevron between the eyes.

The female, who bears no horns, is a bright orange-brown, with up to 18 bold white vertical stripes on her sides, and a narrow mane of bristly black hair running from head to tail.
